How to Dry Wet Boots and Sneakers Overnight
Share
Wet shoes are not ruined by the water. They are ruined by heat and by time. A radiator or a hair dryer dries the outside fast while the inside stays damp, which cracks leather and leaves that smell by day three.
Dry them from the inside, with air, not heat
Air movement inside the boot is what removes the water. Warm moving air is faster, but the key word is moving: a boot sitting in front of a heater with no airflow stays wet inside for hours.
Start the same day, not the next morning
A soaked boot needs roughly three to four hours with a dryer. If you start at 9 pm, it is dry and odour-free by morning. If you start at 7 am, you are wearing damp shoes at 9 am.
Remove the insoles if they come out
Insoles trap most of the moisture and take the longest to dry. Pulling them out can cut the drying time noticeably.
Stuff newspaper only as a stopgap
Newspaper absorbs surface moisture but does not dry the toe box. It is better than nothing overnight, not better than airflow.
