How to Get Pet Hair Off a Couch (Without a Vacuum)

Couch fabric holds pet hair like a filter. Vacuuming lifts the top layer and pushes the rest deeper into the weave, which is why the couch looks clean for a day and then furry again. Here is the method that works better, and it takes about two minutes.

1. Start with the grain, then go against it

Drag the tool in the direction the fabric nap lies first, then reverse. The first pass lifts loose hair; the second pass is the one that pulls out what is embedded. Most people only do the first pass and assume the tool does not work.

2. Short strokes beat long strokes

Work in 30 cm sections rather than sweeping the whole couch in one go. Short strokes keep the teeth in contact with the fabric instead of skipping over the cushion folds.

3. Do it before guests arrive, not after

Once hair is pressed into the weave by sitting, it takes roughly twice as long to remove. Two minutes the day before is easier than ten minutes the morning of.

4. Keep the tool where the mess happens

If the tool lives in a cupboard, you will use it once a month. If it lives next to the couch, you will use it while the kettle boils.
